At Aquafix, our eagerness for fixing every problem in the wide world of wastewater means we encounter some of the strangest situations water can offer. In this new series, Unique Applications, we look at some of our most stand out issues and most inventive solutions.

Quaternary Amine treatment on a wastewater lagoon.

Not all issues are straightforward enough to be solved with a single product. This food processing plant was contributing 5,000 ppm of BOD loading in surges to their 200,000 GPD lagoon. All of the BOD knocked the dissolved oxygen out of the water. An additional strain was put on the biology of the lagoon in the form of high amounts of quaternary amine biocides used by the food processors. The first step was to find the right balance of Qwik-Zyme L and Qwik-Zyme P, products that would reduce the excessive BOD and reduce the shock to the system. Then a product which is currently under development was added to neutralize the quaternary amines. The treatment was topped off with our SmartBOD to balance the nutrients to improve bacteria health, which bounced back to normal in 30 days.

Products Used: Qwik-Zyme L, Qwik-Zyme P, and SmartBOD
