Microbial Health Assessment

Understanding mixed liquor health in aerobic wastewater treatment is crucial for achieving environmental/permit compliance and operational efficiency. Our Microbial Health Assessment (MHA) offers an in-depth evaluation of mixed liquor health, providing essential insights into the biological processes within your treatment system.

Identify System Deficiencies: A single evaluation can reveal whether your system is lacking in a specific area. For example, high levels of inert sludge can indicate inefficiencies in sludge management, while low ABR may point to issues with biomass health.

Informed Decision Making: Regular testing provides trend data that can guide operational decisions. Understanding seasonal variations in sludge volume and determining optimal waste rates are just a couple examples of how trend analysis can enhance system management, optimize system performance, and reduce operational costs. Knowledge is power when it comes to wastewater treatment.

Early Problem Detection: By identifying early warning signs, our screening can help prevent costly problems before they escalate. This proactive approach ensures that potential issues are addressed promptly, maintaining system stability and efficiency.

What's evaluated in the Microbial Health Assessment?

  • Total Solids (TS) and Volatile Solids (VS): These measurements provide information about the amounts of inorganic and organic material present in your mixed liquor. This information is valuable on its own but is used in conjunction with other testing to provide a clear picture of health.
  •  Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), Active Biomass Ratio (ABR), and Biological Stress Index (BSI): ATP is produced during metabolic activity, and they are direct indicators of microbial health. ABR and BSI are calculations we can perform using VS and ATP which give a relative indication of metabolic health and stress.
  • Anthrone & Lowry (Coming Soon): Evaluate the polysaccharide and protein portions of your mixed liquor and EPS. Quickly observe trends in nutrient imbalance, identify nutrient deficiencies, and cure system upsets.
