A 5000 GPD wastewater treatment plant at a national park in Florida called for advice on adjusting pH in their influent. The operator had been using sodium hydroxide, aka caustic soda, to raise pH, but needed a safer solution. The caustic soda was also leaving a crusty film that interfered with the UV disinfection process. Aquafix recommended Boost N Lock, and the operator began premixing it and feeding the solution in slowly. This raised the pH to good and safe levels, but the operator saw another difference. When sampling for ammonia, he saw a significant reduction. The plant’s effluent ammonia was usually around 3ppm, but after using Boost N Lock the ammonia left the plant at 0.095ppm. This is due to boost in water’s alkalinity, which improves nitrification.
